lenox, Mass.–Challahpalooza: The Berkshire Jewish Music Festival, featuring clarinetist and mandolinist Andy Statman and presented by Chabad of the Berkshires, will be held at the Duffin Theater, Lenox Memorial High School, 197 East St., on Sunday, July 25, at 7 p.m.
Statman’s musical styles include klezmer, American folk and Chasidic music. According to Seth Rogovoy, author of The Essential Klezmer and editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living, Statman was one of the leading forces in reviving klezmer music for a modern audience.
Statman, born in Queens, comes from a line of cantors and professional musicians. After a brief stay in Nashville to pursue his interest in bluegrass, Statman took mandolin lessons with David Grisman in Greenwich Village in 1965.
Over the years, Statman has worked with Bob Dylan, Vassar Clements, David Bromberg, Richard Grando and Jerry Garcia. In his early twenties, he began exploring his Jewish identity and began to learn how to play klezmer. He has performed and recorded with Jewish artists such as Itzhak Perlman and Dave Tarras.
Reservations are required.
Tickets and information may be obtained by calling Chabad of the Berkshires at 413-499-9899 or Concepts of Art at 413-637-4845.
