SCHENECTADY–Nationally touring comedian Rabbi Bob Alper will return to the area for a Wednesday, Aug. 25, performance at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center. The show will begin with the “Funniest Person in Schenectady” contest at 7:30 p.m. at the Center, 2565 Balltown Rd.
Contest participants will have two minutes to tell their best “clean” jokes for a panel led by Alper. Alper’s show will be family-friendly.
The Vermont funny man has his bits played daily on Sirius/XM satellite radio. He has performed at venues from the Hollywood Improv to the Montreal Comedy Festival during his quarter-century performing career and continues to perform 80 shows each year.
A graduate of Lehigh University, he was ordained at Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati in 1972 and was the first Jewish person to earn a doctorate in ministry from the Princeton Theological Seminary. He spent 14 years as spiritual leader of Temple Beth Zion in Buffalo and Congregation Beth Or in Philadelphia, and continues to lead High Holy Day services in Philadelphia.
His stage career began in 1986 when he entered and won the “Jewish Comic of the Year” contest in Philadelphia. He has appeared on Good Morning America, Comedy Central and CNN and is the author of Life Doesn’t Get Any Better Than This and the cartoon book A Rabbi Confesses. He has released two comedy albums and recently released the DVD “What Are You….A Comedian?”
He lives in Vermont with his wife, Sherri.
