Lifelong Learning program to begin at SJCC April 26

SCHENECTADY–Five rabbis from four area synagogues will participate in the Schenectady Jewish Community Center’s Community Lifelong Learning program to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, April 26, May 10, and May 17, at the Center, 2565 Balltown Rd. The program is free.

Each session will consist of two parts, a first-hour study

session featuring an individual rabbi, and a second-hour umbrella topic and discussion with all students and rabbis.

Dept. of Justice response on prosecuting Palestinian killers unsatisfying for lawmakers

PALESTINIAN TERRORISTS  recently released by Israel as part of the deal to free captive Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit included killers of Americans. Members of the House of Representatives have called on Attorney General Eric Holder to pursue prosecutions against those terrorists.

TEL AVIV (JTA)–Avi Nobel lived in Tehran and is sure the Iranian people want peace.

“There are a lot of poor people there and what they want is food and to work, not a nuclear bomb,” says Nobel, a spice seller here whose goods include some imported from Iran through third countries.

JERUSALEM (JTA)–Every Friday night, Scott and Theresa Johnson host Jewish Shabbat dinners for lone Israeli soldiers. The meal begins after sundown, preceded by the Kiddush blessing over the wine and singing of “Shalom Aleichem,” the traditional Hebrew song greeting the Sabbath.

There’s one catch, however, made evident by the Christmas cards hanging in the kitchen: The Johnsons are not Jewish. Continue reading

Romney’s triumph smooths sharp edges of GOP Middle East policy rhetoric

Raymond Aubrac, 97, French Resistance fighter
Raymond Aubrac, a prominent figure of the French Resistance against the Nazis during World War II, died April 10 in Paris, at the age of 97, his daughter confirmed.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy called Aubrac a “heroic figure” of the Resistance. Aubrac was one of the last high-profile members of the National Council of the Resistance, a movement founded in 1943 and coordinated by Jean Moulin to fight the Vichy regime. Continue reading

Eva Borlawsky Ginsburg

Eva Borlawsky Ginsburg of Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, NY died on Wednesday April 18, 2012. Born in Whitehall, NY, Mrs. Ginsburg resided most of her adult life in Glens Falls,and Dolgeville NY,later moving to Coral Springs FL. and ,Albany NY. She and her late husband, Sidney were the owners of Lodge’s Department Store in downtown Albany for many years.

Eva is survived by two sons, Barry Ginsburg and his wife Gail of North Palm Beach, Florida, Melvin Ginsburg and his wife Cindy of Brooklyn, NY and a daughter, Joyce Weiss and her husband David of Guilderland, NY. Sister of Esther Green of Queensbury, NY. Grandmother of Lisa and Amy Ginsburg, Dr Howard Weiss and his wife Adrienne, Lori Weiss, Michael and wife Stephanie, Alicia , McKenzie and David Ginsburg. Great grandmother of Sidney and Toby Weiss and Aiynna Ginsburg.

The family would like to thank the devoted and caring staff of Our Lady of Mercy Guadalupe unit and the kind and special care given by Shirley Smith, Daniela Filmer and Beth. Those wishing to remember Eva in a special way may make a memorial contribution to Our Lady of Mercy Life Center, 2 Mercycare Lane Guilderland, New York.12084.
