Temple Israel luncheon to feature sampler of songs by Jewish singers and composers

Temple IsraelALBANY–Prof. Leon Halpert will present a program titled “A Song Sampler of Songs By Jewish Singers and Composers” at Temple Israel’s last Milton and Edith Ruffer Lunch and Learn of the season. The event will be held at the temple, 600 New Scotland Ave., Albany on Wednesday, June 22, at noon. The presentation and luncheon are open to the community.

 In 2014, Halpert completed a 44-year teaching career spanning elementary, middle-school, and for the last 38 years he taught college classes.

Halpert has had a life-long love of singing and appreciates a variety of musical genres. He has sung with a few different choirs, including the Zamir Chorale, and most recently, several local Jewish choirs, including the Ne’imah Chorus. Also, he has had experiences leading services for various synagogues. Since his retirement, Halpert has embarked on a new musical journey. He has recently completed his 54th musical program, which he presents for senior residents at 43 different local senior facilities.

 Singers featured in the program will include Neil Diamond, Naomi Shemer, Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul and Mary), Neil Sedaka, and others. Sammy Cahn, Jerry Bock, Richard Rogers, and Oscar Hammerstein will be among some of the composers whose songs will be presented. Background information of each singer and composer will be discussed. The program will also include a few examples of Jewish humor.

The cost of the lunch is $7, and is to be paid at the door. Reservations for the program are requested and may be made by calling Linda Young  at the temple by Monday, June 20, at 438-7858, ext.117, or ext. 0.
