ALBANY–Three hundred and twenty people attended the Sunday, July 25, Battle of the BBQs, in a benefit to support the Shalom Food Pantry. The fund-raiser, held at the Albany Jewish Community Center, raised $18,000, according to Director Chanie Simon.

Seven barbecue teams competed for the title of Ultimate BBQ Champion. The Albany Anash Basketball Crew took home that top honor.

The menu included sliders, chicken and vegetarian dishes. Samples and evaluating team and a skateboard show were highlights of the program.

“It was inspiring to see so many people come out in support of the food pantry. The teams did an amazing job and really got into the spirit, creating unique recipes for everyone to enjoy,” said Simon.

Participating teams were: Burning Bush BBQ, representing the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York; The Bro Crew, representing Congregation Beth Emeth; Jew-B-Cue, representing Clifton Park Chabad; Aloha Ohav, representing Congregation Ohav Shalom; The Grill Nextdor, representing Nextdor young leadership of the JFNENY; Shish-Chabad, representing Bethlehem Chabad and the Albany Anash Basketball Crew.

The events committee included Rachel Berliner, Elana Kamenir, Erik Lustgarten and Naomi Mozer. Information about the work of the Shalom Pantry may be obtained by calling Simon at 518-439-3310, or e-mailing,
