BENNINGTON, Vt. –Congregation Beth El of Bennington, Vt. will note Kristallnacht on Sunday, Nov. 7, with a candlelight vigil beginning at 5 p.m. The observance entitled, “The Last Symbol Of Hope” will be highlighted by discussions and presentations by Shira Sternberg- Kol and Barbara J. Sussman. Beth El is located at 107 Adams St.

Sternberg Kol will relate the story of her great-grandparents’ painting by Eduard Dollerschell, a German post-impressionist, and discuss the other works of her great-grandparents’ art collection, lost to the family in July of 1942 when Max and his wife Henny Sternberg were deported to the Theresienstadt ghetto.

Max was a patron of local artists and had purchased the artwork from the artist.
Rolf Max Sternberg, Max’s grandson, spent 30 years tracking down his family’s lost property.

Sternberg- Kol will officially unveil the finally returned and recently restored painting of a Pyrenean village, a scramble of stone houses with deep red roofs embraced by rugged mountains, during the program.
