Spencer Mandell

ALBANY–Spencer Mandell, who came to Congregation Beth Emeth as a rabbinic intern in 2023, will become assistant rabbi at the Albany congregation beginning this July. Mandell, who will be finish his studies at Hebrew Union College in New York this spring, has been working with youngsters at the Einhorn Center for Jewish Education, the Teen Leadership Club, and leading services and Torah study.

Robin Sobol, president of the congregation, announced the appointment, saying, “Over the past three years, we have had the privilege of getting to know Spencer and witnessing his remarkable growth as a rabbinic leader.”  In a message to members, she wrote: “From the bimah to the classroom, from pastoral moments to joyful celebrations, Spencer has brought thoughtfulness, warmth, and deep commitment to Jewish life. He has built meaningful relationships across generations and has become a trusted and caring presence within our community.”

“Spencer brings a rare combination of kindness, warmth, and thoughtfulness to everything he does, and his deep commitment to Jewish life at Congregation Beth Emeth is felt by all who know him,” said Senior Rabbi Greg Weitzman. “What impresses me most is Spencer’s remarkable ability to connect across generations—  from our littlest learners to our wisest congregants, he meets each person where they are with genuine care and presence. We look forward to watching him grow and flourish as a rabbi, and we know he will be a wonderful addition to our team.”

Mandell, 28, grew up in Cincinnati. His home congregation is the Isaac M. Wise Temple, where the Rabbi Wise led the nascent Reform Movement after leaving Albany.  “I am filled with gratitude and excitement as I look ahead to continuing my journey at Congregation Beth Emeth as your assistant rabbi,” he told the congregation. “Over the past three years as a rabbinic intern, this congregation has become my spiritual home, a place of Jewish learning, spiritual growth, and deeply connected relationships.”

Mandell graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2019. Following college, he worked at Camp Livingston, a Jewish camp in Bennington, Indiana, as a song leader and communications director. On moving to New York City  for his studies, and at Beth Emeth, he has continued to share his love of music with all types of learners, serving as music teacher last year at Temple Tikvah on Long Island. Other interests include swimming, cycling, reading non-fiction and listening to memoirs.
