Eight teens from the Capital Region were a part of the first campus games from Aug, 3-8, at the University of Pittsburgh. Medal count was 7 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze, all in track.
The teens were housed in one of newest dorms on campus. Once settled in, the teens went from the lower campus to the upper campus for a tour of the facilities and an orientation. First experiences at the Maccabi included Hang Time games and activities with several Israeli staff present.
On Monday, competition began with morning and afternoon sports. Monday night featured opening ceremonies at the Petersen Events Center.
Competition continued Tuesday and the JCC Cares project was featured. This year, all of the teens collected children’s books to donate to Pittsburgh youth. Tuesday night, all of the teens attended a Pirates Baseball Game at PNC Park.
Wednesday and Thursday were playoff rounds for the team sports. Both evenings featured evening activities at the campus.
Next year’s Maccabi Games will be held in Toronto, Canada in August. Andrew Katz at the Albany Jewish Community Center, AndrewK@albanyjcc.org or 518-438-6651, ext. 113 can provide information.
