The Big Galut(e) Klezmer Band is set to perform at Conservancy Hall, 1538 State Route 161 Glen, N.Y. at 3 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. According to organizers the band’s repertory includes klezmer originals and new twists on old tunes; classical pieces; tangos from Buenos Aires and Broadway; and comic songs.
Clarinetist Robin Seletsky is a multi-faceted performer with interests in the classical music world as well as folk and avant garde styles. She grew up listening to her father, the clarinetist/composer Harold Seletsky, and has since found her own voice in this Eastern European folkstyle.
Sasha Margolis is a violinist, author, composer, and arranger, and sometimes he sings. As a violinist, he is well-versed in classical, klezmer, new, early, and jazz music. His klezmer-themed novel The Tsimbalist was published in February 2016.
Carl Riehl (accordion) studied piano and music theory and composition at Oberlin Conservatory. Since switching from piano to accordion in 1999, he has performed with Frank London and Michelle Shocked. He was a featured musician in the movie “The Immigrant.”
Michael Leopold holds degrees in historical plucked instruments from Sacramento State University (1998) and in lute and theorbo from L’Istituto di Musica Antica of the Accademia Internazionale della Musica (2004) in Milan, Italy. He performs both as a soloist and accompanist.
Richard Sosinsky (double bass) is active as a chamber musician and as an orchestral bass player. He is acting principal of New Jersey Festival Orchestra, principal of Knickerbocker Chamber Orchestra, Assistant Principal of Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and performs with American Ballet Theater Orchestra, Allentown Symphony, and the New Jersey Symphony.
