100th celebrant Leila Sontz Lipman.
Leila Sontz Lipman celebrated her100th birthday on July 3, with family and friends. Leila was born in Albany to Anne and Myer Sontz and has been living in Albany her whole life. She is a graduate of The Milne School and NYS State Teachers College where she majored in English.
Her first career was at the welfare department. She then devoted her time to her family and to volunteer work as well as working in the family businesses, Snappy Men’s Shops and Dad and Lad.
Leila and Fred Lipman were married for almost 60 years until his death in 2008. Their children are: Paul married to Sue, living in Sarasota, Fla., Richard married to Sandy of Loudonville and Lori married to Akiva Calka of Albany. Grandchildren are Ben married to Meegan of Denver, Sharon living in Waltham, Mass. and Adam married to Stacey of Peabody Mass. Great -grandchildren are Layla and Mason Lipman, Sophia and Sam.
Volunteer work has included Call For Action, Capital Rep., and the NYS Theatre Institute. She is a life member of Hadassah. She is a member of Temple Israel and was an active member of its sisterhood.
She is a writer, creating poetry for personal occasions as well as having written skits, parts of plays, and lyrics for performances, particularly for the drama workshop at the Jewish Community Center.
At 83 she flew for the first time for a family simcha.
Leila’s sister Marcia, married to Richard Schaefer of Delmar, sent The Jewish World news of the simcha and told us that another sibling is the late sister Rita Schneider (late husband Burt) of Florida, who has passed away.
