An artist contemplates an empty canvas. There are difficult choices ahead for Orthodox artist Asher Lev as depicted in the play “My Name is Asher Lev.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS–Congregation Shaara Tfille and The Jewish Community Center of Saratoga Springs will present a reading of the play, “My Name is Asher Lev” at 2 and at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July

27, at Shaara Tfille, 84 Weibel Ave. The performances are part of the 2025 Saratoga Jewish Cultural Festival.

“My Name is Asher Lev” is a play adapted by Aaron Posner, from the novel of the same name by Chaim Potok. The reading will be directed by Dianne O’Neill, who has directed various regional productions, including a 2023 production of The Chosen also by Chaim Potok.

The play follows the journey of a young Jewish painter, torn between his Chasidic upbringing and

his need to fulfill his inclination to create  art. When his artistic desires threaten to destroy his

relationship with his parents and the community, Asher realizes he must make difficult choices.

The $5 admission charge will also include light refreshments.

Advance reservations are required and walk-ins will not be allowed. Reservations may be obtained by  contacting the congregation at 518-584- 2370 or e-mail, saratogajcc@albany.twcbc.com.
