So…You didn’t exist… and then you exist. I know, there was insemination, and gestation, kicking your mother’s belly, etc., etc., but — you weren’t here, and then  you’re here!

So…you did nothing, and look what you’ve got. Your mama kept you in her belly, and then mommy and daddy fed you and transformed you from, as my high school teacher Sally van Schaick described one of her babies, the “red lump” that emerged from the belly. You were given food and “education,” and you were helped to grow to adulthood.

And now: the past doesn’t exist, the future doesn’t exist—except in your mind. Can you locate yourself right here, right now?

Me, as long as I’m here, I’m “bound and determined,” as one of my young book reviewers once phrased it, to enjoy this moment. I shall winnow my experience to remove all but joy and gratitude, because what else is there?

At the risk of sounding like Kabir, I say, Dude, you’re playing with the house’s money!
