The Jewish Federation of NENY and the Holocaust Survivors & Friends Education Center will present “Austria: Facing Its Past for a Better Future” on Monday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Federation office, 184 Washington Ave., Ext. Federation Chairwoman Phyllis Wang and Hannah Lessing, director of the National Fund of Austria for Victims of National Socialism since 1995, will discuss the changing representations of the Holocaust and other Nazi crimes in public spaces in Austria. Discussion will focus on the last several years, including its recent “Shoah Wall of Names” in Vienna, dedicated on Nov. 9, 2021. The wall has 160 granite stones with 64,435 engraved names and birth years.

Names on the wall include the Jack Zuckerman’s father, who was deported after escape to Belgium, and survivor Hedi McKinley’s grandmother—both murdered in Auschwitz.

The presentation is in memory of Jack Zuckerman.
